What you pay when you buy and sell shares on NEPSE

Every trade through a broker on the Nepal Stock Exchange carries three charges, and a profitable sale also carries capital gains tax. The share calculator above adds them up for you.

Broker commission

The rate depends on the value of the trade, and the rate of its band applies to the whole amount:

Trade valueCommission
Up to Rs 50,0000.36%
Rs 50,000 to Rs 5,00,0000.33%
Rs 5,00,000 to Rs 20,00,0000.306%
Rs 20,00,000 to Rs 1,00,00,0000.27%
Above Rs 1,00,00,0000.243%

SEBON fee and DP charge

The SEBON fee is 0.015% of the trade value. The DP charge is a flat Rs 25 per scrip per day on each side, however many shares or fills it took.

Capital gains tax (CGT)

On a profit, individuals pay 5% on shares held 365 days or less and 3.75% on shares held longer. The profit is the sale amount less the sale's charges and the total buy cost, so a loss carries no tax.

A worked example

Buy 100 shares at Rs 500: the amount is Rs 50,000, commission 0.36% is Rs 180, the SEBON fee Rs 7.50 and the DP charge Rs 25, so the shares cost Rs 50,212.50, or Rs 502.13 each. That cost per share is your WACC. Sold a month later at Rs 560, the sale brings Rs 56,000 less its own charges, and short-term tax falls on what is left above Rs 50,212.50.
